Lainie and Ian RIP 9/2011- 4/2013 My farewell.

I swear I do not know how much more my damaged heart can handle.  I fought so hard for this relationship.  Against all of the odds and all the obstacles, I really loved this man and wanted with all of my heart for it to work.  There was just too much in the way.  Too much baggage we both brought to it and without ever taking the time to learn to talk to each other in an effective way - we were doomed.

We broke up three weeks ago yet he has still been living with me until my rental property next door is free and clear for him to move in. IT IS KILLING ME. I am so crushed and devastated with my heart and mind in shambles.  All I want to do is cry and scream and be fucking sad and not get out of bed for a week and I can't do any of that because he is still here.  I am seriously frayed at all of my edges.  I am so restless in my own skin.  I want to fuck the shit out of him, I want to scream at him, I want to beg him for another chance, I want him completely out of my life and to never lay eyes on him again, I want to hold him and kiss his face and run my hands through his hair. I am upset that he hasn't moved out yet- but when I see him packing up-that upsets me too.  I am a fucking mess.  It is taking the greatest will power ever to keep from balling my eyes out constantly and remain grounded when he is around.  I know that there is nothing I can do or say to change the course of action here so I am just trying to keep it together until I can be miserable in solitude.

I am 100% guilty of seeing all of the potential we had- and I longed for that.  I longed for a life with Ian where we made art and traveled and loved and laughed.  I wanted to have days where he played music and I made art at the table while listening.  I wanted to collaborate. I wanted to see new places and do new things with this man. I was really looking forward to sitting next to him on my computer while he was on his and play video games with him.  I know that might seem stupid to some of you, but I had been waiting for him to build me this bad ass computer so that we could do just that very thing. I wanted to be this man's best friend, confidant, lover, partner in crime.  I wanted our two worlds to combine into something that was solid and healthy and strong.

That is not to say that I wanted him all to myself.  I just wanted us to be the center, the sticking point, and everything and everyone else would circle around it.  My attitude has always been that you can thrive and flourish in a loving supportive relationship and everything you accomplish is way more gratifying when you have someone to share that with.  A relationship is not ever meant to be stifling- it is meant to be your rock and your safe haven- giving you the support you need to go out and conquer your world.

I tried my damnedest to make things happen.  I tried to plan trips.  I tried to involve myself in his interests.  I tried to talk with him about mine.  I tried to excite him about things.  I tried to explain my desires for our life together.

I was willing to give 100% to creating this for us.  Unfortunately, Ian never saw this potential- either that, or he never wanted it.  Never saw the virtue in it.  I could never get him out of his own head and his own concepts long enough to see the good in it.  To see the good in what I was offering him if he chose it.

We had so much bullshit to contend with from day one.  My roommate Dusten, and all of the drama that came with him.  I hated the salon I was working at and had a lot of drama around that too.  Ian being depressed and not working. Then out of financial necessity I moved my business back into the home which added the stress of not being able to be comfortable in it. The whole Laura thing, then the break up and Polly thing. Both of which caused trust issues on both ends.  Then my looming divorce and potentially losing my home.  I have been struggling with my own identity and what I want to offer the world as far as my career path and schooling- all of which made me feel inadequate and sad a lot of the time.  Ian was struggling with similar life problems- his own divorce and responsibilities, trying to figure out what he wants out of life while dealing with his own depression.  Then his mom dies.

I mean seriously- even two people that were already solid in their relationship would flounder under that kind of stress.  We had it from day one.  We never stood a chance.....

I was holding out- trying to hang on until all of that bullshit settled.  I thought finally when I won my home in the divorce that we could have a fresh start- a new outlook.  Everything else was looking up and like all of the problems were going to be in the past. Even though it is the worst thing ever and you would never want to have a parent die- Ian was going to be financially OK for awhile.  We could finally breathe.  We could finally be better versions of ourselves- versions that were relatively stress free and optimistic. We would finally be able to make progress. I had dreams of our own little artist commune here on my property where we involved other creative people in projects, threw parties, had a veggie garden.....  We could be the dynamic duo.

Ian breaks up with me instead.

I think he got stuck on certain points and couldn't see beyond them.  Monogamy being one point he stuck on.  I guess because of language used when we were first dating,  he identified me as a steadfast monogamist and felt limited by it.

The god's honest truth is that all I wanted to do was create a solid trusting foundation first.  Build OUR relationship first.  Build communication first. Get that to a place where there were no doubts about our feelings for each other, and where we stood in our relationship FIRST.  THEN if we wanted to open it up to allow others in- so be it.  I don't see how you can be in a successful and mutually gratifying open relationship if you have not established those other crucial things.  If there is no communication, trust or understanding with one person- how do you expect to have it with two or three?  It creates a lot of uncertainty and insecurities.  I don't require monogamy.  I require trust and communication.  I require stability.  I don't want to fuck the same person exclusively forever either- who does?  But I would like to have that person all to myself while we are establishing this foundation.  I think this seems reasonable.  I do tend to think in long term- but that is because I am loyal.  If I have invited you into my life then I am loyal to you.  My loyalty stands the test of time. I make the assumption that as with all relationships, there is an ebb and flow. There will be times when I am not a priority.  There will be times when my partner is not a priority.  If the loyalty and trust is there then you know that you will come back around to each other and will still be strong. It works very effectively in friendships and I believe it is the healthiest way to be in an intimate relationship. It is really hard to put this into words. I just feel like he never understood my point of view on this.

Or more accurately, he never took "us" seriously enough to create this with me.

Which brings in the other major hurdle I could never get past, and the other point he got stuck on.  The part of the nagger/bitch, where I had the starring role.  All I ever said- all my point ever was, was that I wanted to be part of his life.  I wanted to know that I ranked in the list of priorities.  I wasn't asking to be his entire world- I just wanted a place of importance, to share in his world.   I wanted to know that he cared about me.   It is a very hard and unsatisfactory position to be in, when you have to ask someone to spend time with you.    Again- I was not asking for constant attention- I was just asking for what I think most people would consider the average amount of attention one should give someone they are with.  You have to feed energy into it for it to stay alive, much less grow.

I am not trying to say here that Ian was doing anything wrong.  No one is wrong or right here.  It is just a point of major difference in how we both treat relationships.  I tried really hard to compromise on this and ultimately failed.  It is important for me to have that connection, that intimacy with another person in order to be happy within the relationship.  I believe in my heart that Ian tried to be more attentive for me and he failed miserably too.  This is a point where we truly are not compatible. Where as I am sure he cannot see my point of view, I admit whole-heartedly that I cannot see his.  I cannot understand why anyone would want to shun and deny the joy of connection and intimacy with another person.  Love feels amazing to me.  Affection feels amazing to me.  Deep conversations feel amazing to me.  Why would I deny these amazing feelings?  Why would I try to limit them??  I don't get it.  I'm just hard wired differently than him and in the last couple of weeks I have come to peace with it.  There is no wrong doing here.  We just have very different expectations and needs from the people we are closest to.

I believe you can be independent and self sufficient while also giving attention to a committed relationship.  I do not feel that they are mutually exclusive.  I do not believe in losing yourself in another person- but I do believe in the power and joy created by having a partner who supports you emotionally, intellectually, and sexually.

I am the first to admit that I behaved very badly at times.  I was always coming from a place of love and longing for a solution.  It sometimes came through the filter of frustration.  It sometimes came through the filter of anger.  The underlying sentiment was always the same though- I loved him and wanted to figure it out.

I really was his band's number one fan.  I really was HIS number one fan.  I wanted to see him aspire to whatever he wanted to do- whatever he could come up with I would have been there to back him up.  He wants to be a musician? Awesome!  He wants to have a business? Awesome!  I was on board for anything.  He wants to leave me.....well........ I love him enough to let him go.  I love him enough to suck up my broken heart and let him live next door to me in my rental house.  I love him enough to let him go find his happiness somewhere else and if need be, with someone else.  It hurts worse than anything I have felt in a really really long fucking time.  He shattered my heart into a million pieces.

It is hyper painful when you tell someone that you love them, offer your life, heart, dreams, aspirations and fears up to that person- something so much more intimate and special than your body, but oh yes, you offer that up too, and the response you get is that you just aren't worth the trouble.  It isn't enough and it will never be enough.

So now he will be my next door neighbor and tenant.  I owe him a great deal of gratitude for how he went about things.  He really has tried to come up with a solution that works for both of us.  I just need time.  Time to heal and time to get things into perspective.

I don't even know how to be around him right now.  I miss him terribly already and he isn't even gone- but it feels like a wall is up and I can't get around it.  I am a fun loving happy person but I feel like because of life circumstances during the last year I have been pigeon holed into something I am not. I feel misrepresented in his mind.  I don't know how or if I can ever fix that.  I don't know how to come to peace with that.  I have owned my part in everything.  I have apologized.  I have sworn on everything I care about that if given the opportunity I would prove that things are different now that the divorce and other stressers are gone-but none of that matters.  It is a case of too little too late.  Maybe it never really mattered at all one way or the other.  It is really too hard to tell.

I love him so much it hurts it hurts it hurts.

In Memorium

Bethany Quinn, Ian's mother, took her own life on Sunday.  She was a lovely lady.  I have divorce court tomorrow morning, so I could not go with Ian to be with his family.  It sucks.  I am going to drive up after court for the funeral.  I really liked his mom.  I understand the pain she was in. This is all a bit much to handle- so please excuse my absence.  I am not going to be posting for a few days. If you know us, please give us some space to grieve and deal with the issues at hand.

South by Southwest rap up

I had made a decision that I was going to put my own life on hold for 10 days and really be in the moment.  Really experience South by Southwest and not even think about my problems.  As I have said, this could very well be my last SXSW- so I wanted to make the most of it.

It was all very bittersweet- with that as a back drop.  I really really enjoy volunteering.  I was promoted to shift leader this year- a much much preferred role.  Ian and Joey were shift leaders too.

We volunteered 60 hours in 5 days in order to earn a platinum badge.  The platinum badge gains you entrance into every part of the festival: Interactive, Film, and Music.

I am so so fortunate to live in Austin and have the opportunity to participate in such an amazing event!!!!

So, here is how I spent my SXSW:

Shepard Fairey spoke at Art and Soul, The Global Renaissance of the Gig Poster, and then painted a mural on the side of Empire Control Room.

Tara McPherson, among many others (but let me geek out a minute on Tara!!) had a booth at the Flatstock show.

I saw a lot of live music!!!  These are just the showcases that I remember.  I saw at least 50 bands in 10 days.  It was just so much fun!!!  I danced so much and walked from one end of downtown to the other so many times I think my legs will continue to hurt for a few more days.

PLUS, I had a lovely dinner and tons of drinks with Irish filmmaker Peter Ferris.

Spent an evening watching hip hop with MC Frontalot and MC Lars.  MC Frontalot is super sweet- we hung out with him a bit last year too, since he is friends with Ian, so I was happy to see him again.  MC Lars was super sweet and happy.  I really enjoyed hanging out with both of them!!

I also spent an afternoon drinking Yager shots with the famous Lifto- of the Jim Rose Circus.  I have known Lifto for about 25 years- yet it never stops amazing me how people gawk at him.  We watched the Japanese gore porn movie Dead Sushi.

I also saw lots of comedy.  Sarah Silverman and Reggie Watts are the names I remember- but I went to several comedy shows at Esther's Follies over the course of the 10 days.

Rob Zombie screened Lords of Salem, gave a public talk and then signed books.

Dave Grohl gave a wonderful keynote speech.

I had a ball!!!!  I hung out with friends, made new ones, had some PDA with my boyfriend, stayed drunk for 10 days, it was wonderful!!  The best part of all?  I spent $27. $27 for 10 days of awesome?  Gotta love SXSW!!!!!!

Ian's badge.  I love the stupid face he is making. I know how much he loathes having his picture taken.

Playing with pedals.  We entered a drawing to win $3000 worth of pedals!  I don't even play guitar and I was excited about it!!

Fun with Ian's hair

We wanted to have fun hair for SXSW.  Ian wanted a mohawk, so I had a lot of fun    putting pink, turquoise, and orange all through it.  He ended up giving out my business cards to several people during the festival- hopefully more people will want fun colors in their hair in the next few weeks.  It makes my job super fun!

I just think he is so darn cute!

Friends are what make life worth living

In the face of losing everything, my perspective on what is important has come into sharp focus. Friends and loved ones, and the experience of being with them is the most important thing there is.  Material possessions don't matter.  In the end nothing matters but how you touch someone, and how they touch you.  I try to live my life this way- I feel like in the last few years I have tried to walk this talk. Ian and I spent Friday night together. We have actually been spending quite a bit of quality time together. I am happy for that.  Something in my head has switched- I don't think we will be together much longer.  I love him with all of my heart but I am capable of letting him go.  Just because you love someone doesn't mean you have to be with them.  It has been an interesting life lesson to go through.  It hurts because I had expectations.  I had the highest hopes for us.  He still takes my breath away- I swear he does.   I will enjoy him for as long as I can and let him go with love when it is time.  It seems like I am being dramatic here- but seriously, my life is so up in the air right now, who knows where I will be in 6 weeks.  Saturday we spent with Favre celebrating his birthday.  I reunited with Jennifer and we spent and evening talking and catching up.  Sandy took me out and we had a ball- I needed to and had not laughed that hard in a good minute- it was soothing to my soul.  Laura is taking me out on Wednesday.  I am feeling strong at the moment.  It comes in waves.

My heart grew 3 sizes that day

The last couple of days I have been spending real quality time with Ian.  This always makes me happy.  I can't help it- I love him.  He makes me swoon.  Much like I have been enjoying my home, I am enjoying him while I can.  I am not taking anything for granted.

Rockapocalypse

Last night the world didn't end.  I wasn't invested in the notion but I wouldn't have cared very much if it had.  It was a fun night with friends and music- as are most of my nights.  Last night my friend Peter put together an 8 band line up at Bernadette's Bar.  Ian's band was playing too.  Sandy and Favre came and cheered them on with me.  Afterwards there was a little party at our place, but I fell asleep on the couch- with everyone hanging out around me- I was OUT.  I have not slept well at all since I got served with the divorce papers.  I am just thrilled that my friends didn't play any jokes on me while I was sleeping!

My handsome man had tracers coming out of his fingers.  Peter had set up the most amazing laser light show and my phone camera was having none of it.

Peter was awesome!  He had samples and sounds and lights and a smoke machine. Total one man show!

If you watch this video, i would highly recommend muting the volume.  The sound is crap.  It is just a little snippet of the cool lights playing off of Ian that Jason caught on his phone.  I only include it because- well, it is my blog and I love Ian so watching lights play off of him is fun for me.  I don't expect you to understand.

My baby came home today!!!!!  He has made me feel all better about everything!
I love Ian.  Gush gush gush.

December 18, 2012

I am a good person.  I am generous, kind, loving.  I am going to be OK.  I have friends that love me and have my back.  Am I stressed out?  HELL YES.  I am going to stay positive though, I am going to breathe, stay zen, and have faith that I will land on my feet.  2013 is going to be a rebirth and reinvention of my life.  I shook off the fear that was trying to grip me, put on my red combat boots, and braved the holiday shoppers at The Armadillo Art show.
I didn't spend any money, but I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all of the art and listening to the live music. Sahara Smith was performing.  I was kinda in a mental fog- so I didn't take any pictures of anything.  It was nice to get out of the house and be around people who are having a good holiday season, spending time with family and loved ones.  I am PMSing- I am sad that I can't afford to be with my family during the holidays, I miss Ian- but even if he was home I doubt he would know what to do with me at the moment.  I feel needy.  I am scared about this divorce process.  I want to keep my silly little house and I am so afraid I won't get to.  I am so afraid of being homeless and jobless.

I tried really hard to snap out of it.  Being around all of that expensive jewelry and art that I couldn't buy wasn't cutting it- so I came home and wrapped Ian's Christmas gifts.  That made me feel better.  I love giving gifts- I get as much joy from it as getting them.  I could not spend much this year but all of the gifts are thoughtful and I know he will love them.
Then I took Stella for a walk.  We never do that- so she was excited and it felt good to get some fresh air pumped into my lungs.  I am making a promise to myself that I will use healthy behaviors to deal with the stress that is setting in.

What a FUN weekend!!!

I had the best weekend!  Friends, art and music.  Started on Saturday at the Cherrywood Art Festival.  I pulled up and parked right in front of this:

This is how we decorate for Christmas in Texas. The first friend I saw was Laura Gibson, pictured here.

She is a jewelry artist- look at her amazing work!  I really wanted this pinkie ring!  It is made out of the inside of a geode.

She is going to custom make me one like this.  (The one pictured is her personal piece)  She has custom made rings for me before- they are really high quality silver and colored resin.  Her company is called Metal Girl, and she is local here in Austin.

Then I moved on to Jamie Jo Fisher's booth.  She has a new baby daughter since I last saw her.

Jamie takes vintage buttons, beads, and baubles and works them into whimsical sterling silver pieces.  She made this necklace for me.  (It is laying on a vintage pink plate- that is not part of the necklace!)

I love this pink one too..........It was so great to catch up with her.  She really warmed my heart by telling me that I inspired and encouraged her to continue her work at a time when she was questioning a lot of things.  This conversation happened over two years ago, but the words I said she took to heart and still recalls them today when she needs a boost.  It brought tears to my eyes!!

I discovered a new attendee this year: Estudio Real.  The most beautiful Jewelry made of exotic woods and semi precious stones.  Flawless. The artist, Sharon, was very approachable and cool.  She lives in Mexico 3/4 of the year. (lucky lady) and makes this jewelry.  Sounds like a perfect life.  I was torn over which one to buy..... This one was round with a semi precious stone set in the middle...

This is the one I ended up with.  It is a pinkie ring, made of ebony wood from Africa, a piece of turquoise, and a hint of sterling silver.  There is a groove carved into the one side so that the finger next to it fits perfectly and comfortably against it.  Completely contemporary.  The wood is so SMOOTH.

Do not poke fun at my shitty manicure.  I've been making art that is hard on a girls hands.

I also bought this bar of soap by Feto Soap.  It smells just like milk chocolate.  Now I smell just like chocolate.........

Then I came home and Ian and Joey were rehearsing for a gig they had that night.

The event was to try and raise money to pay all of the actors and employees of the Ecopocalypse haunted house- that ran for two weeks around Halloween.  At the end of the gig they closed shop without paying anyone.    This party started at noon on Saturday and didn't end until 5 AM the next morning.  We were there for the ENTIRE time.  THE ENTIRE TIME.  Ian's band wasn't even scheduled to go on until 3AM.  They had an art area where you could draw a picture, then hang it with a price and if someone wanted to buy it, the money would go to the benefit.  I thought that was a good idea.

I had to smile at this.  There is a craft mafia that goes around and creates graffiti made of knit.  They will knit on traffic signs, light posts, your car, etc....
I am happy that the tree has a sweater on tonight!  Yeah, my flash didn't go off. Sorry the pic is so dark- but I wanted to post it anyway!

The benefit included an art auction, and I met this really cool guy- Michael Zornes.  He was one of the artists featured. Super sweet guy, we talked off and on all night. He was there till 5AM too.  I am telling you, 17 hours is a long time to be at a party!

He uses repurposed materials found inside of old electronics and machinery. He makes jewelry, like these pendants shown, as well as larger installations.

This piece looks lit up doesn't it?  He squirted hot glue onto a pane of glass, stuck it in the freezer to harden quickly, then painted the shapes with neon tattoo ink.  It looks very fluid and "alive" to me.

I didn't get to bed until 6:30 AM on Sunday, but had to be right back up to go to my friend Dave's garage sale.  I have known Dave for about 25 years.  We go way back to my Minneapolis days.  He moved to Austin a few years back.  I love this studio shot of him!

Handsome devil!

His wife is from New Zealand, and he was having a sale to make money for her immigration.  He was pedaling a lot of really cool vintage toys and music instruments.  I know quite a few guys who were drooling over this collection.

He even had parts so you could build your own guitar.  I thought they would make for fun art projects.

After all that, I went with Kris to The Jackalope, and sat there till they kicked us out at 2.

We headed back to her house where we planted ourselves on her couch and continued to talk and laugh our asses off until it was almost daylight again.  I was delirious from no sleep in two days.  Aren't her cats beautiful?  Raul here looks like a panther.

Clara Jean is quite the little lover. Her fur is so pretty!

I got home around 4:30 AM and slept until 10.  Ian and I went and ate yummy Vietnamese Sandwiches at Tam Deli and then parked it on the couch with Favre to watch football.  I was feeling festive so I was sporting my Christmas socks.

I love listening to the guys yell at the TV during football. I am too tired to take a good pic at this point.

Ian was showing off his Gundam figure that he put together and painted.

Now it is 1 AM on Tuesday morning.  Impressed that even with no make up on I am not looking too haggard for so little sleep. (8 hours of sleep out of 65 hours) OK, that thought just exhausted me completely.

GOODNIGHT!!!
